Citroen DS4 Tries not to Conform

Citroen have released a set of new videos to showcase the new DS4 crossover vehicle. It looks like a massive coupe but it has five doors and a high ride height. It has lots of headroom, like an MPV, but less bootspace than the C4 it is based on, and the spiky rear windows don’t open.

So we get why Citroen have decided to play the “non-conformist” card and brag about how their car breaks the mould. What mystifies me slightly more is their choice of videos to illustrate their point. Let’s have a look at them:

Urban Sport

What happens?
A man parkours down a flight of steps in a dingy warehouse with a DS4 at the bottom.
Non-conformist?
Five years ago, you might have accepted this, but free-running went mainstream a long while ago.

Urban Art
What happens?
A DS4 is parked in a dingy warehouse. A video installation of abstract, rapidly changing images is projected onto its side.
Non-conformist?
Definitely not. I think if I were an artist working in the medium of video, I would be quite upset by this. There is no originality to the set-up – in fact it is a hackneyed stereotypical installation.

Urban Fashion

What happens?
Some DS4s are in a dingy warehouse. A striking young lady walks past the cars and some floodlights in a succession of edgy outfits of various styles.
Non-conformist?
Well this is a fashion show. A standard fashion set-up. Once again Citroen are using a stereotypical interpretation of a creative discipline to illustrate how subversive and ‘different’ they are.

Urban Music

What happens?
A dingy warehouse. A man retrieves a drum from the boot of the DS4 (The only shot of the interior). More drummers join him in a demonstration of traditional rhythms and percussive noise. The man replaces his drum in the boot.
Non-conformist?
Well I will give you this, Citroen – it isn’t mainstream music. But it is traditional. It is non-conformist in the same way that Morris Dancing is. Is that what you are going for? Perhaps it is.

I find these videos rather disappointing, because they have ultimately taught me nothing about the car, and the message they are intended to convey is hopelessly lost in the lazy and unimaginative way they have been executed.

Ich bin ein Frankfurter

As you might know all the recent automotive news in coming from the Frankfurt motor show, so I thought I would share with you my highlights.

Maserati GranCabrio
I know I blogged about it not very long ago, but how good does it look in real life?

Citroën REVOLTe
This cool quirky looking concept bears more than a passing resemblance to the iconic 2CV. The interior is also very interesting with this concept, with woven black leather, crimson velvet and aluminium. Rumours are a toned down version of this baby town car is set for production.

Ferrari 458 Italia
One of the most hyped up cars has been the Ferrari 458 Italia. Personally I’m reserved about some styling points, I think the bonnet looks like it doesn’t fit to the headlights properly and I’m not keen on the sticky out rear lights. There are two things I love about it however, the gorgeous shape, especially the rear, and this incredible video:

Audi R8 V10 5.2 V10Most cars look stupid with overuse of chrome, very few can get away with being totally chrome – although I think the Audi R8 pulls it off big time!

Lamborghini Reventon Roadster
Ok so you can’t really see the Reventon, but I think this Lambo frauline offers way more in the way of eye-candy.

Thanks to autoblog for the pics!

Vive la France

Last Sunday, thousands of French car fans descended on the Rockingham Racing Circuit for the Adrian Flux French Car Show 2009. The Show was a big hit, with the great weather and the large array of activities and live action on offer. This included Track and Rally racing, trade stands, car clubs, live stunt teams, the F1 pit stop challenge and the Rockingham virtual racing game.

Attracting the largest amount of attention though was the Flux Babes. Although they were having their pictures taken for most of the day, they found time to collect for charity, drift with Opposite Lock and have the OTT Stunt team jump over them.

A good day was had by all except the people who’s cars got caked in brown dust from the rally circuit.

If you are interested in your French cars, then check out influx. This month influx has taken on a French theme, with some great articles on the monstrous Renaultsport Mégane R26R and one of the biggest fans of the iconic Citroën DS.

Although there isn’t very many pictures a the moment here are some of the places I found some:

French Car Show Videos

With only 38 days left until the Adrian Flux French Car Show 2008, at Rockingham on June 22nd, we’re working flat out to help make sure that this year’s show is the best yet.

For us that means taking an unprecedented number of Flux Babes, getting an even bigger and better Scalextric circuit, and sorting out free popcorn and candy floss, plus loads more besides.

So we thought now might be a good time to take a look back at last year’s show, so here, for your entertainment, are some video interviews we did at the 2007 show, including some of the owners whose cars were good enough for the Meguiars show car enclosure, as well as some of the club members, whose cars ranged from the sublime to the Tigger.

Can’t wait for the next one…

French Car Show

We’ve been following the buzz on the various forums about the Adrian Flux French Car Show, and we’re really pleased so many people had such a great time.

So to help everyone digest other people’s opinions of the day (and a common theme seems to be how much better looking the Flux Babes were than the other promo girls!) we’ve gathered links to many of the threads together in one place. I think we’ve got enough threads to make a sizable rug, actually, but if you know of more, or want to big up your own, please add them using the comments facility.

Here are some of the threads other people are contributing to:

Be warned there are some honest and frank opinions on these sites. Note also that some require free registration.

If you haven’t already, check out our French Car Show 2007 pics.

Videos are coming soon.

The show attracts a massive variety of great vehicles, standard, performance, supercar and modified. The cars maybe the stars, but there’s all sorts of other activities, too, including a 2.1 mile circuit, 0-60 sprint track, a Pro-kart circuit , live skills tests and demos, 2 arenas, a rolling road and much more.

There’s also live entertainment, motorsport teams and personalities, over 30 clubs and 60 traders, plus fairground rides and more.
