Triumph started making cars in 1923, having already been big in motorbikes. In 1936 the two parts of the business went their separate ways, but soon after this Triumph went into receivership and was eventually rescued by Standard. Post-war the TR sports cars as well as the Herald, Vitesse, Spitfire GT6 and Stag were very successful and the 1960s and 70s were Triumphs glory days. After being acquired by Leyland in the sixties, Triumph looked to have the upper hand when Leyland took over BMC, but the name was phased out in favour of Austin and Rover in the early 80s. The last Triumph was not even a real Triumph - the Triumph Acclaim was built from Honda Ballade parts as a stopgap until the Rover 200 arrived.
