Some cars, no matter who is driving it, are just plain girly. They don’t even have to be Barbie pink or highly accessorised. By just looking at a car it provokes a reaction and you assume a female owns it. Men tend to see cars as an extension of their personality and masculinity, but what makes a car girly? Car insurance specialist, Adrian Flux Insurance Services, thinks these are some of the girliest cars on the market.
The newer shape Volkswagen Beetle has been deemed a girly car probably because of its smooth curves and bubble like appearance…. and the fact it comes with an in-built flower vase. The Beetle’s girliness could also be down to the ‘cuteness” of Herbie, an old model Beetle with a personality. Though with a name like that, surely he’s a boy?
The Toyota Yaris and Nissan Micra are also girly by appearance and are also petit, bubble-like, curvaceous cars. The size could be what attracts women to these small cars, easy to drive and park. Plus, of course plenty of men probably can’t fit behind the wheel.
The majority of Ford KA drivers seem to be young women. Perhaps this is because of Ford’s trusty reputation. Some studies have revealed that women prefer practical cars and choose cars based on reliability. Ford even promote is as “funky, friendly and fantastic to drive”, hardly a macho description.
The Volkswagen Eos Convertible is described by VW as ‘elegant’ and its good looks certainly make it more of a girly ride. Convertibles are often deemed girly cars and the Mazda MX5 is no exception. The MX5 is a curvy, small roadster with “minimal mechanical complexity”, which may also be why it appeals to non-car-mechanics-enthusiastic females.
The Fiat 500, in particular the new model relaunched to celebrate the original’s 50th birthday, is another curvaceous car that oozes girly personality and fun-factor. This low emission car is also available in a limited Gucci-customised edition (www.fiat.co.uk/500bygucci/) and if that isn’t girly then we don’t know what is.
Whether the Audi TT, especially the older shape, is a girly car is a contentious issue but its sleek design means it has made its way onto our list of girly cars.
The Mini Cooper is a car that shouts fun and personality, another small car that has sped its way onto our list. A “classy supermini”, as described by www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring, is the Suzuki Swift, which is also popular among female drivers.
Other girly cars include the Citroen C2, Smart car (especially in pink) and the Vauxhall Tigra. No matter how girly your wheels, Adrian Flux will insure it!
