With the 2016 Olympics underway this weekend, all eyes are on the tracks, pools and pitches of Rio as some of the world’s greatest athletes compete for coveted gold medals. Hundreds of thousands of spectators are expected to flood into the city between August 5 and 21, making it one of the busiest times in the city’s history.

But even when the so-called Cidade Maravilhosa (Marvelous City to you and I) isn’t hosting one of the world’s most incredible sporting spectacles – the Olympics follows hot on the heels of the 2014 football World Cup – it still manages to draw in an impressive 2.8million tourists each year, attracted by some of the finest beaches, carnivals and natural wonders that the world has to offer.

For those of you thinking of a Brazilian break without tackling the Olympic crowds, here’s Adrian Flux’s top 9 reasons that you should book your next holiday to Brazil:

Beaches

Copacabana beach

If beaches are your thing, you won’t find any better than in Brazil. The country boasts more than 2,000 beaches, which stretch along the shoreline and more than 1,000 islands that dot the Atlantic Ocean within the country’s limits. Whether you’re looking for a sandy catwalk full of the beautiful people or a quiet sanctuary where you can let it all hang out, Brazil will have the perfect beach for you.

Food

Brazilian food is fabulous – and the country boasts one of the top 10 restaurants in the world, D.O.M  in Sao Paulo. Deo Optimus Maximus means: ‘God is greatest and best’ and, fittingly, heavenly food leaves the pass every service thanks to pioneering chef Alex Atala. If your budget doesn’t quite stretch to Michelin quality, try the annual Brasil Sabor festival, the largest of its kind in the country, or Comida di Buteco, a festival of bar food that involves far more than pork scratchings and peanuts…

The Amazon

Amazon rainforest

Forget the huge online retailer and head to its namesake in Brazil, one of the longest rivers in the world and a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will leave you breathless. The Amazon river and rainforest are the most famous natural attractions in a country that has an incredible 62 National Parks and hundreds of conservation areas.

Rio de Janeiro

Christ the redeemer statue

The sights and sounds of Rio de Janeiro are reason enough to hop on a jet to Brazil. There’s Sugar Loaf Mountain and the astonishing Christ the Redeemer statue, the capital’s incredible cathedral, a collection of amazing museums including the Museu de Arte Contemporanea and the new Museu do Amanha (the museum of tomorrow), not to mention the non-stop nightlife.

Carnivals

Carnival Brazil

No one does carnival like Brazil – and you have hundreds to choose from. From the world-famous Carnaval in Rio, to the Reveillion Party on Rio’s Copacabana beach on New Year’s eve and Salvador’s Carnaval attended by two million revellers, you’re never far from a party in Brazil.

Traditional Brazil

Samba parade

If Rio’s nightlife doesn’t grab your attention, try getting in touch with traditional Brazil with a visit a more colonial town such as Ouro Preto set in the beautiful Serra do Espinhaco Mountain range, or visit the space-age Brasilia, one of the world’s most modern capital cities.

Winter sun

If you’re looking for sunshine during Britain’s coldest months, Brazil is ideal – its high season is from December to March with the low season in May to September. During the December to February summer, temperatures are in the high 30s – during the rest of the year they are normally in the mid 20s to low 30s. Frankly, there is no bad time to visit Brazil.

Wonders of the deep

Whether you’re a novice snorkeler or a professional diver, there are few better places in the world to take to the water and explore the seabed. With a coastline that stretches from the fringes of the Caribbean to the south Atlantic, the variety of sea life is staggering, and you’re guaranteed a good time beneath the waves.

Gateway to South America

Iguassu Falls

Brazil is the gateway to South America and a handy stepping stone to some of the most amazing places on the planet, such as the Andes, Machu Picchu, Buenos Aires and Patagonia. Thinking of heading south? Ease yourself into Argentina by visiting the spectacular Iguazu Falls, a collection of breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls on the Iguazu River which fall within both Brazil and Argentina.

Make sure you never lose the carnival spirit while you’re abroad by ensuring that you’re covered for problems like lost luggage, cancellations, medical expenses, personal accidents and the loss of your passport.

Adrian Flux can offer great benefits for a surprisingly low price and offer you the peace of mind you need.
