Possibly the world’s coolest caravan, and certainly the most novel one, has just gone on display at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu in the New Forest.

The life-size caravan, measuring 3.6 metres by 2.2 metres and weighing in at 1,200kg, holds the Guinness World Record as “the largest caravan built with interlocking plastic bricks”.

Built by a team of 12 model makers using 215,158 LEGO bricks, the astonishing creation does almost everything a real caravan can do, with electric lights, running water and seats that fold into a bed.

There’s even a breakfast fry-up of eggs, mushrooms and tomatoes on a two-hob burner, a fridge full of food, a vase of flowers and complete chess set laid in position and awaiting an opening gambit.

The caravan and its contents took more than two months and 1,000 painstaking man-hours to design and construct.

Layers of LEGO bricks were built on top of a conventional caravan chassis, proving how strong and versatile the plastic pieces can be. Only standard off-the-shelf LEGO pieces were used, with no custom-made components.

The caravan is a replica of the classic T@B 320 teardrop-style caravan and was created by LEGO building specialist Bright Bricks as part of the National Caravan Council’s Freedom to Go campaign.

The campaign aims to change public perceptions of leisure vehicles, and to inspire and educate people about holidays in trailer tents, motorhomes, touring caravans, caravan holiday homes and lodges.

It also aims to provide inspiration and advice on how to decide what type of leisure vehicle to choose and to help plan holiday adventures.

The unique LEGO caravan is on show next to the Caravan and Motorhome Club display at the museum until October.

The colourful children’s building bricks were first manufactured in Denmark in 1949 and up until July 2015 600 billion LEGO parts had been produced. The name LEGO is derived from the Danish “leg godt” which means play well.
