An Audi Cabriolet driven by Princess Diana will go under the hammer at Blenheim Palace on Saturday.

The 1994 Audi is tipped to make between £35,000 and £40,000, having been driven by the former of Princess of Wales before her death on August 31, 1997.

It’s sale at auction comes hot on the heels of news that one of the Queen’s old cars, a 149mph Daimler Majestic, is being auctioned next month.

The Audi Cabriolet was loaned to the princess for her personal use by Dovercourt Audi of St John’s Wood, London.

The car is registered L541 GJD but has been off the road in storage for many years.

Audi Cabriolet “in storage since car’s significance became apparent”

Its current owner bought it in 2004 and used it as a family car until 2009, before putting it in storage when the significance of the vehicle became apparent.

As The Princess of Wales, Diana was known for her charitable work, and was patron of more than 100 charities.

According to sale notes “her choice of an Audi Cabriolet would well have been due to the car’s understated elegance combined with a powerful engine”.

Very few cars are actually owned by the Royal Mews, apart from the limousines intended for state use, and most vehicles made available for “junior” royalty are provided by manufacturers hopeful of some beneficial exposure, and this Audi Cabriolet was no exception.

The Coys auction will offer a selection of classic and sports cars, including a 1926 Bugatti Type 37 with only two owners since 1940 and period competition history at Brooklands and Shelsley Walsh.

The car, estimated to be worth between £400,000 to £600,000, is one of three Type 37s supplied in 1926 to Bugatti agent and world speed record holder Malcolm Campbell.
