If you are looking for a classic commercial vehicle with which to promote your company, look no further than this iconic beauty.
For generations, visitors to Yellowstone National Park – which was renamed Jellystone for the benefit of the much-loved cartoon series featuring Yogi Bear – were chauffeured around the park’s scenic roads in massive open-air buses, possibly the most stylish commercial vehicle money could buy.
They were manufactured and supplied by the White Company of Cleveland, Ohio, and operated by the privately owned Yellowstone Park Transportation Company.
The last generation of this Yellowstone commercial vehicle was the White 706, of which 98 were delivered between 1936 and 1938.
Commercial vehicle styled by Alexis de Sakhnoffsky
Built with a robust six-cylinder engine on an overbuilt 190-inch-wheelbase chassis, the White 706 bus was bodied by the Cleveland coachbuilders Bender, to a beautiful aerodynamic design by the famous automotive stylist, Count Alexis de Sakhnoffsky.
A novel feature is the large canvas roof that could be completely uncovered in good weather, providing panoramic views of the park for the tourists riding inside.
This model, Yellowstone Park no. 402 dating back to 1937, is coming up for auction by RM Sotheby’s in Hershey in Pennsylvania, USA, in October.
It has been subtly modified for more user-friendly, reliable road use, including the installation of a 300-cubic inch Ford inline six-cylinder engine and automatic transmission, as well as power steering, a 1995 Ford F450 master cylinder with power brake booster, 12-volt electrical system, an electric fuel pump, and Autometer instruments.
Yellowstone commercial vehicle is an open-air classic
According to the auctioneer’s sale notes it can “easily be driven on modern roads, making it the ideal vehicle for transporting friends and families on special occasions. Even the largest party can go out on the town in this open-air classic”.
It is being sold, along with a number of charming period photographs of Yellowstone Park buses, without reserve.
In paraphrased words from the great Yogi Bear, the motoring experts at Adrian Flux are “smarter than the average insurance broker” and they will be delighted to find a bespoke insurance policy to cover your commercial vehicle, no matter how rare, unusual or collectible it is.
