A home built in 1913 by the family behind Liberty of London is for sale with a £4.95m guide price.

Pipers at The Lee, a village three miles from Great Missenden in Buckinghamshire, is quite a landmark.

One of the things that makes it extra special is a figurehead of Admiral Lord Howe which stands proud to welcome visitors.

It came from the prow of HMS Impregnable, the last wooden warship built for the Royal Navy in 1860, and stands at the end of the drive up to the house.

Arthur Liberty built Pipers for his nephew and heir

Pipers was built by the founder of the Regent Street store Arthur Liberty for his nephew and eventual heir, Ivor Stewart-Liberty.

The figurehead was acquired by the Liberty family nine years after Arthur’s death when they bought the remains of the warship after it had been scrapped by the navy.

The timbers were used to refurbish the frontage and interior of the Liberty Regent Street store.

Lord Howe figurehead is Grade II listed

Since 1983 the admiral has been Grade II listed to ensure its survival.

In 1975 the family planned to move the treasure they jokingly referred to as “the garden gnome” to London to mark the Liberty department store’s 100th anniversary but experts said it was too frail.

It has since been fully and expertly restored.

Liberty home has 6 acres, 7 bedrooms and outside pool

Being marketed by Savills, Pipers is a considerable property standing in six acres of land. It boasts seven bedrooms, four bath/shower rooms and six reception rooms.

The grounds include a heated swimming pool, tennis court, stable block, barns, paddocks, oak framed triple bay garage block and Victorian style conservatory.

Pipers is a much-admired country home and the figurehead of Admiral Lord Howe is one of its most desirable features, which goes to show sometimes you need to protect what’s outside your home as much as what’s inside it.

With that in mind, Adrian Flux Home is one of the UK’s leading specialist insurance brokers and one of only a few offering a full range of high value home insurance policies to homeowners.
