Carrying your luggage on the top of your car can be a lifesaver if your car boot is full, but how much is too much?

When it comes to carrying luggage on the roof of your car there are rules and regulations you must strictly follow, or you could face prosecution just like this driver from Wales, who balanced a car on top of his own vehicle.

So if you’re setting out for a road trip or a holiday, make sure you follow these tips as to whether the load is overhanging the front or rear of your vehicle. However, please be advised that even if you follow the below information you could still be charged if what you are carrying is deemed overweight or insecure.

What to do if load projects from the vehicle either forwards or rearwards:

  • Length exceeds between one-two metres – no requirements specified

  • Length exceeds between two-3.05 metres – Attendant and marker boards required

  • Length exceeds beyond 3.05 metres – You must give notice to the police two working days in advance as well as needing marker boards and an attendant

What to do if loads overhang from the sides of the vehicle:

  • Over 305mm lateral projection – You must give two working days notice to the police before travelling, ensure you have marker boards in front and rear and additional lights will be needed during hours of poor visibility

  • Length exceeds between 2.9 and 3.5 metres in width – You need to notify the police two working days in advance of travelling, ensure you have marker boards in front and rear and additional lights will be needed during hours of poor visibility

  • Length exceeds between 3.5 and 4.3 metres width – You need to notify the police two working days in advance of travelling, ensure you have marker boards in front and rear, additional lights will be needed during hours of poor visibility and an attendant.
