Buying a second hand car for £5,000 and under doesn’t mean you have to buy an old banger in fact it can be a great way to ensure you get excellent value for money for a relatively small fee.

And there are lots of choices too. From stylish hatchbacks and family cars to more elegant vehicles such as coupes if you have enough patience and remain vigilant while shopping around for your next car.

So if you’re wondering how to buy a second hand car in style or simply just looking for a new second hand car to tide you over during the lockdown period and beyond for your commute check out our picks below:

Volkswagen Up

Coming in at a price of around £4,450 the Volkswagen Up has glorious upmarket feel compared to its Seat and Skoda alternatives with its neat handling and comfortable journeys.

For this price you’re more likely to find the least powerful 60hp petrol engine, which is quiet and makes the Up nippy enough for town and city driving. This may look a small car on the outside, but the inside is modern and spacious. With the features digital radio, smarter body coloured exterior detailing and air-conditioning the Move Up trim is miles ahead of the Take Up and it comes with a huge boot to fit everything you need.

Vauxhall Astra GTC

If you want something a little sportier rather than a standard three-door hatchback, the Vauxhall Astra GTC ticks the box.

Coupe lines turn the humble Astra into a squat, sporty hatch. Age wise you’ll be looking at around a 2011 reg, there are plenty on the market with roughly 40,000 on the clock for just under our £5,000 budget.

Peugeot 407 SW

best second hand cars

Need a bit more space than either the Up or Astra can provide? It’s an old model, but the Peugeot 407 SW estate is big enough to accommodate three kids and all their luggage.

It’s a proper practical family mover and there are plenty of low milage examples to be found.

A rather high priced 2.0-litre diesel was seen with just 25,000 miles on the clock for just under our £5,000 limit, but keep an eye out for cars with double that mileage as the prices will be a lot cheaper.

Mazda MX-5

The car that single handedly reinvented the cheap, affordable roadster and the MX-5 is still a superb driver’s car. The 2005 model with as little as 11,000 miles on are available used for just £5,000.

Rear wheel drive, with a convertible soft top it’s the perfect car for long drives on hot days, which come few and far between in the UK and the 1.8-litre petrol engine will be a little thirstier than what you’re probably used to, but at the cost of miles per gallon, you can’t get much better than the MX-5.

Rover Mini Cooper

best second hand cars

Looking for a second hand car that will lose you no money after you’ve sold it? Then the Rover Mini Cooper is the perfect car for you. We found a few 1996 Rover Mini Coopers at the bargain price of £4,000.

Now £4,000 for a car that’s 23-years old may seem a little pricey, but this car will not depreciate too much, so if you’re looking to grab short-term car to tide you over this is the one for you.

Audi TT

best second hand cars

Yes your eyes are not deceiving you, you did just read Audi TT. Incredibly there are a few 2007 TT’s on the market under £5,000, however, yes there is a slight catch, most of them have clocked over 100k miles during its lifespan which can may put a few of people off.

But if it’s recently passed an MoT, got all of its service stamps and had few owners, you may pick up one of Audi’s most iconic vehicles for a cheap price. For those who are city drivers or those not looking to cover many miles, a TT would be an excellent choice.

BMW 5 Series

Premium German brands often lose a lot of value quite early in their life, which is why at this price point you can grab bargains like this smooth straight-six BMW 5 Series Touring. There’s loads of space in the boot and room for the family, too, but the 525i is also great to drive and comfortable on the motorway. Running costs might be steep, but there’s plenty in the budget to cover this, which makes this premium wagon an absolute steal.
