Every week, we&#8217;ve been glimpsing the mechanical beauty that is the gull-winged Mercedes SLS coup\u00e9 by AMG set the pace as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.netcarshow.com\/mercedes-benz\/2010-sls_amg_f1_safety_car\/\">F1 Safety Ca<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.netcarshow.com\/mercedes-benz\/2010-sls_amg_f1_safety_car\/\">r<\/a>. Associations are powerful. Brands are reinvented by the context in which they are consumed.<\/p>\n<p>This regular presence ahead of the F1 pack, along with a sustained, sexy and expensive ad campaign &#8211; must have branded the Benz badge deep into our consciousness &#8211; because despite not being a Mercedes fan until now I can&#8217;t stop romancing in my mind the very ridiculous idea of one day driving an original gull-winged 300 SL.<\/p>\n<p>I glimpsed one once, about twenty years ago, in \u00a0the garage of a Californian friend-of-a-friend. It was \u00a0dusty and neglected and hadn&#8217;t been driven in a decade &#8211; and at the time probably wasn&#8217;t (quite) as sought after and valuable as it is today.<\/p>\n<p>It seemed to me at the time a quaint piece of Teutonic \u00a0fifties futurism that was at odds with the day glo excesses of the 1980s. Even so, you could feel the car&#8217;s presence hunkered down deep in the shadows, the dormant silver arrow nestling in the shade of the Californian sun.<\/p>\n<p>It was in fact, a bullish initial order for 500 Gul Winged cars from mercedes USA that \u00a0ensured that the car made it into full production in the first place. it was an untrammelled success &#8211; the first popular Benz in the USA; the fastest production car on the streets; the first petrol engined car to feature direct injection; one of the the first production sports cars to feature genuinely tested aerodynamics that really worked.<\/p>\n<p>Benz have of course gone large on creating their latest gul wing as the spiritual successor to the most iconic Merc ever.\u00a0Wether or not the comparison is appropriate, we&#8217;ve certainly been enjoying the visuals.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"\" class=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zauEeIwQV0g?rel=0&#038;showinfo=0&#038;controls=1&#038;enablejsapi=\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gul Winged Love<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1779],"tags":[860,1286,1135,851,1128,2016,955,81],"class_list":["post-16066","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-cars","tag-1950s","tag-cars","tag-classic-cars-2","tag-german","tag-german-cars","tag-mercedes","tag-road","tag-supercars","manufacturers-mercedes"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.0 -
