In my mind, there isn\u2019t another two-wheeler that sums up the decade\u2019s design influences better.<\/p>\n<p>Innocenti, based in the Lambrate district of Milan, crawled out of the smouldering wreckage in the bombed-out industrial north with a plan to put post-Mussolini Italy back on its feet by putting the nation\u2019s workers on Lambretta\u2019s eight-inch wheels.<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/lambretta_ser2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17122\" title=\"lambretta_ser2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/lambretta_ser2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/lambretta_ser2.jpg 298w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/lambretta_ser2-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/lambretta_ser2-278x396.jpg 278w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 298px) 100vw, 298px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Of course, fellow Italians Piaggio created the Vespa, and their wasp buzzed onto the roads in 1946, a year earlier than Lambretta\u2019s model A was released. And the Vespa\u2019s designer Carradino d\u2019Asconio, whose aeroplane design business had been curtailed by being on the losing side in the war, should be regarded as a genius for establishing a template the company\u2019s scooters still use now: full legshields; revolutionary monocoque frame; \u2018bubble\u2019 sidepanels; single-sided front fork.<\/p>\n<p>The original Vespa was pretty, clever, a classic. In contrast the first Lambretta was utilitarian. And Piaggio went on to sell over 10 million scooters to Lambretta\u2019s four million. But that\u2019s all blah, blah, blah as far as I\u2019m concerned, because in my mind Vepsas are for Roundheads with bad Madness tattoos and I\u2019m a Lambretta loving Cavalier.<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/lambretta-jean-shrimpton-1967-2-1280-nologo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17123\" title=\"lambretta-jean-shrimpton-1967-2-1280-nologo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/lambretta-jean-shrimpton-1967-2-1280-nologo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/lambretta-jean-shrimpton-1967-2-1280-nologo.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/lambretta-jean-shrimpton-1967-2-1280-nologo-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/lambretta-jean-shrimpton-1967-2-1280-nologo-1024x819.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/lambretta-jean-shrimpton-1967-2-1280-nologo-624x499.jpg 624w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/lambretta-jean-shrimpton-1967-2-1280-nologo-278x222.jpg 278w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/lambretta-jean-shrimpton-1967-2-1280-nologo-526x420.jpg 526w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/lambretta-jean-shrimpton-1967-2-1280-nologo-555x444.jpg 555w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/lambretta-jean-shrimpton-1967-2-1280-nologo-572x457.jpg 572w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Piaggio are now one of the world\u2019s heavyweights in two-wheeled production. They own Moto-Guzzi, Aprilia and Gilera. Innocenti, meanwhile, Lambretta\u2019s manufacturer, stopped scooter production in 1972 (before going out of business completely in the 1990s). These contrasting facts elicit nothing but a shrug and a teenaged \u2018So?\u2019 from me. In virtually every area that can be turned into a pie chart and illustrated with an overhead projector Vespas trump Lambrettas. But Lambrettas are cool and beautiful. And better. End of.<\/p>\n<p>It did take a while for the Milanese company to hone their design. Legshields and sidepanels didn\u2019t appear till 1950 and can\u2019t be described any more accurately than \u2018slightly bulbous\u2019 till the Slimstyle designs appeared in 1962. Throughout the 1960s the Slimstyle, first used on the Li Series 3, developed into the TV series 3 and, for me, the last word in scooter design, the SX200.<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/LambrettaSX200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17124\" title=\"LambrettaSX200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/LambrettaSX200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/LambrettaSX200.jpg 500w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/LambrettaSX200-227x300.jpg 227w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/LambrettaSX200-278x366.jpg 278w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/LambrettaSX200-336x444.jpg 336w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Why do I get so frothed-up about a somewhat effeminate commuter scooter? Let me explain.<\/p>\n<p>The long, steel sidepanels have creases sharper than those in Dean Martin\u2019s Rat Pack-era trousers. The pure jet-age panel indentation is augmented with a three-pronged flash in cast alloy. One of the prongs dissects a daintily cast number giving the engine\u2019s cylinder capacity. The 150 has different, only slightly less beautiful panels with it\u2019s own design of sidepanel flash. The rear of the SX200\u2019s sidepanel has another delicate cast Lambretta badge, while the square-topped legshields have a further chromed script \u2018Special\u2019 and either X150 or X200 badge. There are details everywhere: heavy alloy panel handles; cable operated disc brakes (Lambretta were one of the first factories to fit them to production two- wheelers); the cast alloy horn cover with it\u2019s lower-case \u2018i\u2019 for Innocenti.<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Lambretta-punto-di-vendita.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17129\" title=\"Lambretta punto di vendita\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Lambretta-punto-di-vendita.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1434\" height=\"1076\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Lambretta-punto-di-vendita.jpg 1434w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Lambretta-punto-di-vendita-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Lambretta-punto-di-vendita-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Lambretta-punto-di-vendita-624x468.jpg 624w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Lambretta-punto-di-vendita-278x208.jpg 278w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Lambretta-punto-di-vendita-526x394.jpg 526w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Lambretta-punto-di-vendita-591x444.jpg 591w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/Lambretta-punto-di-vendita-572x429.jpg 572w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1434px) 100vw, 1434px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>I remember reading that the designer referred to the SX200 as &#8216;his beautiful swan&#8217;. See one from the side and you can understand why. The headlight and handlebars are the head, the sweep of the legshields a long neck, the panels are the wings folded over the bird\u2019s body. And like the swan, the exterior is serene while underneath the simple 200cc two-stroke, four-speed single paddles away frantically.<\/p>\n<p>Now I tend to like bikes that are stripped-back and minimal. I generally curl my lip at the over-designed. But the SX200 is fussy and covered in styling baubles and tinsel. You can\u2019t deny your first love, though, and the SX200 is mine. I\u2019ve owned one, the same one, for 19 years and I\u2019ll never sell it.<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/NuovaLam1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17131\" title=\"NuovaLam\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/NuovaLam1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"381\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/NuovaLam1.jpg 381w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/NuovaLam1-285x300.jpg 285w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2010\/11\/NuovaLam1-278x291.jpg 278w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 381px) 100vw, 381px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Lambretta might have gone out of business but they went out with a bang. Car design genius Bertone was commissioned in 1969 to redesign the SX range and created the Grand Prix. The GP came in bold colours like a blood red, turquoise and a very 70s mustard \u2018yellow ochre\u2019. Bertone fought to ditch the polished alloy badging that makes the SX so recognisable and of its time. The Grand Prix\u2019s badging is minimal. Instead of polished castings the sidepanels have plastic grilles and racey stick-on stripes. The horn grille is simplified and black.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, all the grey rubbers and plastics that had been grey on Lambrettas since the early-50s, turned black. Some early 150cc Grand Prixs had a black \u2018blob\u2019 sticker on their legshields. The legendary story of how it came to be there states Bertone became so angry that the bosses at Innocenti wouldn\u2019t let him replace the old-fashioned polished alloy with the new black he, and other leading designers, would usher in, he threw his pen on the desk and it landed on the drawings of the new scooter, spitting a glob of ink right onto the legshields on one of the plans.<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/102-lambretta_gp_the_virile_one.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17132\" title=\"102-lambretta_gp_the_virile_one\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/102-lambretta_gp_the_virile_one.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Bertone won, but there are still dozens of labour intensive fittings, like the fiddly floorboard runners and rubber legshield edges, that can\u2019t have helped production costs.
