{"id":48604,"date":"2017-09-01T13:19:41","date_gmt":"2017-09-01T12:19:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.influx.co.uk\/?p=48604"},"modified":"2022-06-15T12:42:26","modified_gmt":"2022-06-15T11:42:26","slug":"peter-frost-motoring-curiosities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/cars\/peter-frost-motoring-curiosities\/","title":{"rendered":"Peter Frost\u2019s living museum of motoring curiosities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Peter Frost cheerfully admits that some people think he\u2019s a little bit crazy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not necessarily because of the 21 cars and motorbikes crammed into garages and sheds and hidden under covers behind his semi-detached west London home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nor because not one of those vehicles is newer than 24 years old &#8211; a trusty Skoda Favorit that\u2019s the closest thing he has to a \u201cdaily driver\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the nature of his collection that marks him out as possibly the UK\u2019s most eccentric hoarder of motoring curiosities, many of them so rare you could drive for a lifetime and not see another.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That so many of his vehicles originate from behind the Iron Curtain, machines generally looked down upon by western motorists for decades, is what raises so many eyebrows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s the Ukraine-made <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zaporozhets 968; the two colossal Tatras, built in what was then Czechoslovakia; the Polish-built WFM Osa scooter, one of only two UK<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> specification models made<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; one of only two UK spec machines built<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Peter\u2019s passion extends far beyond the vehicles of the Eastern Bloc, with a pair of ultra-rare, British-built AF Spider three-wheelers jockeying for position with an Italian Benelli motorcycle, a Berkeley T60 three-wheeler <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">undergoing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a rebuild, and the motorcycle that started it all &#8211; a DMW Deemster scooter-cum-motorbike made in Wolverhampton.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SFP-Eastern-Cars-84web.jpeg\" alt=\"AF Spider three-wheeler\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1668\" \/><figcaption>The very rare AF Spider three wheeler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy interest really is in things that are mechanically unusual rather than specifically vehicles from eastern Europe &#8211; it just so happens that they produced a lot of interesting things,\u201d says Peter, a retired software engineer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was always interested in them from when I was a boy. I would look through <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Observer\u2019s Book of Automobiles<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which would include cars that came from behind the Iron Curtain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThen when I was old enough to drive I didn\u2019t have much money so was always looking for things that were cheap and needed fixing. I became more interested in the technology and the history of these vehicles, and it grew from there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1973, at the age of 19, Peter bought the ex-police DMW scooter after seeing an advert in Exchange and Mart magazine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was pretty much the bike that introduced me to weird and wonderful machinery, because back in those days when I was riding it around no-one had seen one and people used to stop me and ask questions about it,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SFP-Eastern-Cars-135web.jpeg\" alt=\"DMW Deemster\" width=\"2600\" height=\"1735\" \/><figcaption>The DMW Deemster, the motorcycle that started it all<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat got me into researching the history and finding out things about them. I could never bear to part with it and, after a while, I ended up with two motorbikes, then three motorbikes, then four motorbikes, and then cars joined the scheme of things and I ended up with cars as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs you can probably gather, I\u2019ve always been better at buying than selling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, over the years Peter has sold a fair few too, admitting to having owned vehicles running \u201cinto three figures\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As he grew older, Peter\u2019s collection grew larger, more diverse, and increasingly difficult to house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI lived in a terraced house in Walthamstow, but luckily there was quite a large back yard and we constructed a garage and a covered area,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI kept some of the motorbikes in the house and could easily push them through the front door, which opened onto the street,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">although the handlebars didn\u2019t quite fit through the doorframe so by the time I sold the house there were a number of notches cut out at different heights for the different bikes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Peter has been known to hold open days where invited people can come and look at his collection, it\u2019s far from a museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of the cars or bikes are in concours condition, though they are kept smart and original enough to show, and all those capable of running are in regular use.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SFP-Eastern-Cars-120web.jpeg\" alt=\"Wartburg 353W Tourist\" width=\"2600\" height=\"1735\" \/><figcaption>The Wartburg 353W Tourist, which is used regularly<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI use my old cars all the time,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen I go shopping I go in an interesting car. I keep a diary of their use so I know what\u2019s been used and what needs a run &#8211; that way I know they all get used rather than just sitting around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI often get in the Trabant and I get stopped by east Europeans who love it &#8211; they say \u2018this was my car!\u2019, that sort of thing. They\u2019re always pleased to see it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SFP-Eastern-Cars-146web.jpeg\" alt=\"Trabant P601\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1595\" \/><figcaption>The Trabi raises plenty of smiles<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a similar story in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zaporozhets, the quirky Ukrainian car that features a rear-mounted, air-cooled, 1200cc V4 engine that Peter says is probably a unique configuration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAround this area there are quite a few people who originate from the old Soviet states,\u201d says Peter. \u201cThey tend to get quite excited when they see it. When I go shopping in it, it\u2019s not unusual for me to be waylaid by someone from Latvia or Ukraine or Russia who wants to have a chat about it and, at times, they\u2019ve even wanted to sit in it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SFP-Eastern-Cars-25web.jpeg\" alt=\"Zaporozhets 968\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1668\" \/><figcaption>The Zaporozhets 968 on the road<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peter is well aware of the reputation of some of his favourite vehicles; the 600cc, two-stroke <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/cult-classics\/sixty-years-trabant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trabant, which celebrates its 60th birthday in November this year<\/a>, has long been derided in the west as the epitome of communist failure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But with three million Trabants sold, they did the job they were designed for in a cash-strapped East Germany that had no option but to conserve precious resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of these east European vehicles are very good, practical, easy-to-fix, and reliable vehicles when looked after,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SFP-Eastern-Cars-172web.jpeg\" alt=\"Trabant P601 engine\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1668\" \/><figcaption>Under the bonnet of the Trabant<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThrough all these years I\u2019ve never had a Trabant fail to make it home, and I\u2019ve driven all over Europe in old Skodas, another much-maligned car.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The well-worn Trabant jokes, including the myth that it\u2019s made of cardboard (it\u2019s actually a tough plastic called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duroplast<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), are met by Peter with a straight bat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of nonsense spoken about them, but these myths have a habit of taking on a life of their own and they just get repeated,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s actually a little like driving an early Mini &#8211; they\u2019re very nippy, agile and they corner quite well. They\u2019re a bit noisy inside, but then cars of the 1950s, which is when it was designed, were a bit noisy inside. It\u2019s quite fun to drive really.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a very clever design and they are very practical little cars, very good around cities, easy to park, and very reliable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI compare them with things like Morris Minors and 2CVs, which I\u2019ve driven. I think they compare very well with that sort of car. That\u2019s the sort of market they were aimed at \u2013 a people\u2019s car, cheap, efficient transport.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The little car attracts plenty of attention on our photoshoot, a security guard at the private block of flats we choose for our location is interested enough not to move us on, while two old ladies stop for a chat and a man with a carrier bag shouts \u201cnice car\u201d from the walkway above.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, none of them seem to have any idea what it is, and that\u2019s par for the course for Peter on his travels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI get all sorts of questions and comments &#8211; is that a Harry Potter car is one of the favourites,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SFP-Eastern-Cars-160web.jpeg\" alt=\"Trabant P601 rear view\" width=\"2600\" height=\"1735\" \/><figcaption>Harry Potter car? No, but there&#8217;s a hint of an Anglia there<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peter acquired his first Trabant 601 not long after the fall of the Berlin Wall, in somewhat unusual circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had been interested in Trabants for a long time and, when the Wall came down, the Sun newspaper bought one, imported it into the country and gave it away as a prize in a competition,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI entered the competition but didn\u2019t win. But they published enough details of the woman who did win to enable me to contact her, and it turned out she couldn\u2019t drive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI traced her and told her over the phone I was interested in buying the car, and asked her what she wanted for it. I went up on the train with the cash in my pocket and drove it home. It was quite an experience driving the car &#8211; I\u2019d never driven a Trabant before and had to work out the gear positions on the steering column gear-change<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; but it was quite fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt wasn\u2019t running very well, it was January, and snowing, there were diversions on the motorway, the wipers weren\u2019t working properly &#8211; they spent more time wiping the bonnet than the windscreen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Sun probably stopped the first person they saw driving one, bought it and then did nothing to it &#8211; the fan belt was almost broken in three places where it was down to a single strand. It got me home though!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That first Trabant was a 1984 model, and Peter subsequently sold it and replaced it with one built in the very month the Wall came down, November 1989.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SFP-Eastern-Cars-175web.jpeg\" alt=\"Trabant P601 date stamp\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2002\" \/><figcaption>Date stamp: built the month the Wall came down<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe month and year of manufacture are stamped onto the bulkhead, and it\u2019s one of the reasons I\u2019ve kept hold of this one for so long,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSomebody rang me up in the middle of the night and said \u2018I\u2019ve got a Trabant, do you want it?\u2019 I asked how much? And he said he wanted \u00a350. I said \u2018OK that sounds good\u2019 and he said \u2018I will bring it round\u2019 and he was there about two hours later!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn daylight I thought it was in better condition than mine, so in the end I thought if I can get it registered, which was a bit of a challenge in those days because then the DVLA didn\u2019t make it easy to register imported cars, I\u2019d keep that and sell the other one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At any point, Peter has an outdoor and an indoor restoration project underway, with the recently-acquired Tatra 603, a large, upmarket Czech V8 saloon (outdoor) and the Berkeley (indoor) on the list for attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SFP-Eastern-Cars-110web.jpeg\" alt=\"Tatra 603 headlamps\" width=\"2700\" height=\"1802\" \/><figcaption>The big Tatra is ready for restoration<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The inside of Peter\u2019s house is every bit as remarkable as what\u2019s outside, with a huge collection of miniature cars and aircraft almost covering one wall, along with an array of clocks from eastern Europe, old aircraft radios, and handbooks, guides and histories in multiple languages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There genuinely appears to be nothing the 63-year-old doesn\u2019t know about his vehicles, their history and the wider stories of these weird and wonderful vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the age of 19 he\u2019s been on an automotive voyage of discovery, delighting in the obscure, the offbeat, the technically unconventional &#8211; and bringing some tender loving care to the cars of the Eastern Bloc so often dismissed as crude and inefficient by the West.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Peter\u2019s cars and motorcycles may not be to everyone\u2019s tastes, but they\u2019re every bit as exotic in their own fascinating way as any Ferrari, Lamborghini or Bugatti.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Coming soon, we&#8217;ll take a closer look at Peter&#8217;s vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs by <a href=\"http:\/\/simonfinlay.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Simon Finlay<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Peter Frost cheerfully admits that some people think he\u2019s a little bit crazy.
