It was the 1990s. Curtains haircuts were in, the New Romantics were out, and The Simpsons were on everyone\u2019s TV. And if you were any sort of follower of fashion, you had a coup\u00e9 on your driveway.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This was an unexpected turn of events. In the late 1980s, outside the realms of serious performance cars, coup\u00e9s were utterly pass\u00e9; few even existed on the market any more, and those that did were slow sellers, their popularity usurped by the far more happening hot hatch<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

But then an odd thing happened. As the next decade began, people started buying coup\u00e9s again. It seems buyers didn\u2019t just want the status and performance of a hot hatch; they wanted a car that looked good \u2013 and one that, by extension, would make them look good too. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"VW<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Certain manufacturers were perfectly placed to satisfy this new-found appetite. Volkswagen had just replaced its ageing Scirocco<\/a> with the sharp, pert Corrado<\/a>; Vauxhall\u2019s new Calibra, meanwhile, emerged in 1989 with scalpel-sharp styling and aerodynamic curves that looked like the future. Soon the trickle became a stream; Toyota\u2019s curvy Celica, Rover\u2019s petite 200 Coup\u00e9, and a freshly re-invigorated Honda Prelude joined the party. And the coup\u00e9s kept coming. By 1998, almost every major manufacturer had a coup\u00e9 on offer.\u00a0Some even had more than one to cater for those who wanted their cute coup\u00e9 a size smaller or larger. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"90s<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

But then, almost as soon as the rush to buy coup\u00e9s had really got into its stride, it dried up again. At the turn of the millenium, it was as though a switch had been flicked; affordable coup\u00e9s were suddenly out of favour, and while a few soldiered on regardless, the party was over. So it has remained to this day; the SUV is well and truly in, and the affordable coup\u00e9 has become a thing of the past.<\/span><\/p>\n

That doesn\u2019t mean we can\u2019t still enjoy these cars, though. In fact, there\u2019s every good reason to do so. For starters, many of them are still as brilliant as they were in their time. Take the Fiat Coup\u00e9<\/a>, which remains one of the best-handling front-wheel-drive cars ever made, or the Ford Puma, which is similarly stimulating on a twisty B-road. Or the Peugeot 406, whose super-smooth V6 made it a junior grand tourer for a cut-down price. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"90s<\/a><\/span>What\u2019s more, these days, against a backdrop of more modern, bloated cars, these old coup\u00e9s look absolutely terrific. Take the Alfa Romeo GTV<\/a>, for example, its beady eyes and beaky nose giving way to a fabulously wedgy waistline, a cute glasshouse and chunky hind quarters. Or the beautifully-proportioned Volvo C70, a car whose styling even now defies belief given its roots in the fantastically boxy S70 and V70<\/a> twins. And happily, most of these cars are modern enough to be usable, with power steering, anti-lock brakes and, in some cases, air conditioning and cruise control. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"Stunning<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

It gets better, though, because the vast majority of these cars are now available for <\/span>pretty low prices:<\/span> under \u00a31,000 for a decent Peugeot 406; under <\/span>\u00a3<\/span>3,<\/span>000 for a decent Ford Pum<\/span>a;<\/span> just a little more<\/span> for a Volvo C70; <\/span>and under \u00a34,000<\/span> for a tidy Alfa Romeo GTV<\/span>,<\/span> Honda Prelude VTi<\/span>, or cl<\/span>ean, low-mileage, historied Fiat Coup\u00e9 Turbo. If you\u2019ve got \u00a3<\/span>7,5<\/span>00 to spend, meanwhile, you can bag yourself a tidy Volkswagen Corrado VR6.<\/span> With the numbers of these lovely vehicles steadily dwindling, values have increased in recent years, but you can still get a brilliant deal on some of these 90s coup\u00e9s.<\/span><\/p>\n

In an age in which everything interesting seems to cost the earth<\/b>, <\/b>these old two-doors make stylish, enjoyable modern classics that can be yours for <\/b>relatively little<\/b>. Best get in on the act, then \u2013 before everyone else remembers what a great buy one of these 1990s coup\u00e9s can be.<\/b><\/p>\n
