{"id":9927,"date":"2009-12-17T10:37:25","date_gmt":"2009-12-17T10:37:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.influx.co.uk\/wordpress\/?p=9927"},"modified":"2023-07-14T09:29:58","modified_gmt":"2023-07-14T08:29:58","slug":"futurama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/features\/futurama\/","title":{"rendered":"Futurama!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 1939-1940 New York World&#8217;s Fair \u2013 which took place of course just as the world teetered on the brink of apocalypse \u2013  made the expansive promise to show visitors &#8216;the world of tomorrow.&#8217;  <\/p>\n<p>At the fair&#8217;s heart was the  General Motors Pavilion and  a ride called the Futurama.<\/p>\n<p>According to many reports  lines were endless. There was a real hunger amongst the public to experience what  life would be like in the  the year 1960.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10033\" title=\"gemvehicles\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/gemvehicles.jpg\" alt=\"gemvehicles\" width=\"1000\" height=\"793\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/gemvehicles.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/gemvehicles-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/gemvehicles-624x494.jpg 624w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/gemvehicles-278x220.jpg 278w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/gemvehicles-526x417.jpg 526w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/gemvehicles-559x444.jpg 559w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/gemvehicles-572x453.jpg 572w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Hover cars, anti-gravity machines and highways in the sky: all traceable to 1939&#8217;s Futurama<\/em><\/figure>\n<p>In a very real sense, the American modernist ideal articulated at the Futurama with those of Europe in the ashes of the second world war \u2013 and a world that approximated  the Geddes-designed utopia grew out of the devastation.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10025\" title=\"city of 1960_'39\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/city-of-1960_39.jpg\" alt=\"city of 1960_'39\" width=\"850\" height=\"634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/city-of-1960_39.jpg 850w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/city-of-1960_39-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/city-of-1960_39-624x465.jpg 624w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/city-of-1960_39-278x207.jpg 278w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/city-of-1960_39-526x392.jpg 526w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/city-of-1960_39-595x444.jpg 595w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/city-of-1960_39-572x426.jpg 572w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Rather than featuring actual  General Motors concept cars, visitors to Futurama were introduced to prescient visions of a real urban future of : like proximity control devices and sat nav.<\/p>\n<p>Squint critically at the dream encapsulated in the Futurama vision:  you can see that what this all about was the promotion of a tax funded road system that would motor the postwar economy of both North America and Europe \u2013 thereby furthering the rise and rise of the biggest corporation in American history.<\/p>\n<p>And though it&#8217;s ironic to think that the corporation who summoned this sort of world into existence is now all but bankrupt, it&#8217;s obvious that the exhibition has huge influence on popular culture in general.  Post war architecture and urban planning, science fiction movies  and would be unrecognisable had Futurama not been created.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10041\" title=\"geddescreations\" src=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/geddescreations.jpg\" alt=\"geddescreations\" width=\"950\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/geddescreations.jpg 950w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/geddescreations-300x149.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/geddescreations-624x310.jpg 624w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/geddescreations-278x138.jpg 278w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/geddescreations-526x261.jpg 526w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/geddescreations-891x444.jpg 891w, https:\/\/cdn-influx-wp.adrianflux.co.uk\/uploads\/2009\/12\/geddescreations-572x284.jpg 572w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Designer Norman Geddes pre-empted gridlock by a few decades<\/em><\/figure>\n<p>Though it&#8217;s easy to dismiss the somewhat quaint trappings of an exhibit like Futurama, think for a moment: the world might be a better place if the establishment had followed the designs of the exhibition to the letter.  <\/p>\n<p>Norman Bel Geddes, the designer of the Futurama carried out extensive research into potential traffic problems and how to overcome them with technology \u2013  decades before the problems even manifested themselves. <\/p>\n<p>But nobody paid much attention to the problems Geddes anticipated.
