Scissor doors? Check. Outrageous styling? Check. Stupidly fast? Check.

It can only be a Lamborghini, and not just any Lamborghini – this is the 217mph cream of the crop, the Aventador 750-4 Superveloce, launched in 2015 as the horsepower arms race with Ferrari shows no sign of stopping.

So the F12 Berlinetta pumped the power up to 730bhp? Bosses at Lamborghini decided to add another 10bhp (the 750 in the name refers to metric horsepower) on top for only the fourth Superveloce model in its history.

The result? A fighter-jet of a car that can hit 62mph in just 2.8 seconds – not far off a Bugatti Veyron, but in a significantly more aggressive-looking package (and at a fraction of the price).

When the first Aventador was launched in 2011, it drew both praise and criticism for its driveability; some loved its ease of use, while others pined over the need to tame previous Lamborghini beasts.

Still, the 6.5-litre, mid-engined V12 took Top Gear’s Supercar of the Year Award in its launch year, only for the F12 to take the prize in 2012. Something had to be done.

That something was the SV – 50kg lighter, improved downforce and aerodynamics, upgraded powertrain, and superior handling.

Definitely more supercar than grand tourer, partly because of the thinly-padded bucket seats, the SV clocked a scorching Nurburgring lap time of 6 minutes 59 seconds and, when Evo magazine took to the road, they were left in no doubt about the car’s star quality.

“The SV looks incredible on the road. Few cars have ever snapped the necks of onlookers quite so readily as this one,” said road tester Dan Prosser.

On the road, he said the SV “is just about as exciting and dramatic as supercars get”.

“As the discussion around autonomous cars gains traction and environmental pressures mount relentlessly, Lamborghini has built a timeless supercar that stands for all the values we car enthusiasts hold dear ” performance, fun, noise and drama.”

Early in 2016, the SV Roadster was unveiled to a bewitched public; a limited edition raging bull of a car that will set you back around £300,000. It somehow manages to look even more angry and shark-like than its coupe sibling, but shares the same engine and performance statistics.

Ripping from 0-62mph in 2.8 seconds will feel a lot quicker, however, with the wind in your hair.
