Exploring your passion for classic Volkswagen cars

Of all the cars in the world, few have the power of the Beetle, the camper or the Karmann Ghia to raise a smile as they burble and putter along the road.

These earlier air-cooled cars have a cross-generational appeal, adored as much by children who fall for their cheeky looks, millennials who love their retro cool, and baby boomers who remember them on the roads in their tens of thousands.

Then there’s the Golf, which did the impossible and successfully replaced a car as iconic as the Beetle, the sporty Scirocco – a Karmann Ghia replacement – and the muscular Corrado.

All cars that captured the public’s imagination, even if they weren’t initially to the taste of air-cooled devotees.

Why do people love their VWs so much?

So what is it about the classic VW? How do these cars get under the skin, take root and refuse to let go?

We decided to find out in the only way that makes sense: by asking VW owners.

More than that, we wanted to explore the source of their passion, their earliest VW memories, the first car that got them hooked, and how their lives have been touched, maybe even changed, by the cars bearing that famous badge: a V balanced on the central spike of a W.

You may not personally know the people featured here, but if you love VWs, you may recognise them: they may be just like you.

These are their Dubtales, and we hope you enjoy them.

About us

Adrian Flux is the UK’s largest specialist insurance broker, with a motoring passion as deep as our customers’.

Many of our staff and managers own classics and modified cars themselves, which gives us a true insight into what makes enthusiasts tick.

It’s why we’ve grown from a small team in the 1970s to employing more than 1,000 staff spread over four offices in East Anglia and Hertfordshire.

Our commitment to providing bespoke insurance to petrolheads extends to entertaining them too, providing motoring features and images at Influx and Forever Cars, both nominated for national awards.

Founded in 1974 by Adrian Flux himself, the company started by providing insurance for the growing kit car market, and for disabled motorists who often struggled to get a good deal.

Within a few years, a range of schemes was developed for drivers of cars including Hillman Imps, Ford Capris and American imports.

As the classic car scene blossomed into the 1980s, Adrian Flux quickly became heavily involved, serving a market that would exponentially grow towards the turn of the century.

VWs, whether air or water-cooled, from Beetlescampers and Karmann Ghias, to Golfs, Jettas and Corrados, got their own specialist schemes run by Dub devotees.

Cover for home insurance, 4x4s, military vehicles, Japanese imports, motorhomes and motorbikes, via Bikesure, became integral parts of the business.

Our expert staff became fixtures at motor shows across the UK, while our name continues to become more widely known with high-profile sponsorships of Silverstone Classic, British Touring Car champion Ash Sutton and Team BMR, and the British Speedway Grand Prix.

With a roster of more than 30 nationwide insurers to choose from, and myriad specialist schemes, we pride ourselves on being able to cover practically any vehicle or home.
