Saul Bass is a hero in so many ways. Responsible for the title sequences and graphic identities of some of the greatest films of all time, for us his work reached a high point when he weaved his magic on John Frankenheimer’s brilliant, flawed masterpiece Grand Prix.
Just looking at Bass’s credit list is awe-inspiring – and it’s amazing to think this Jewish-American immigrant was able to train his sensitive aesthetic to so many diverse worlds. He was able to pick resonant sets of images and then assemble them perfectly – from the spooky kitsch of Hitchcock to the grease, adrenalin and noise of Formula 1.
But just dig the poster and be amazed at the drama created by the opening sequence below and you’ll see what we mean.
