Organisers of Simply Porsche are expecting a bumper turnout at Beaulieu in the New Forest, home of the National Motor Museum, for an event which helps mark the 70th anniversary of the German supercar.

It was back in 1948 that Ferry Porsche produced the first 356, a four-cylinder, air-cooled, rear-engine, rear-wheel drive car.

Describing the thinking behind it in an interview with PCA magazine in September 1972 he said:  “I had always driven very speedy cars. I had an Alfa Romeo, also a BMW and others.

“By the end of the war I had a Volkswagen Cabriolet with a supercharged engine and that was the basic idea. I saw that if you had enough power in a small car it is nicer to drive and it is more fun.”

Porsche ‘hardly taken backward glance’

The first 356 was road certified in Austria on June 8, 1948, and since then the Porsche marque has hardly taken a backward glance. Today Porsche boasts the 911, Cayenne, Panamera, Macan and the 718 – what a collection!

All owners are invited to cruise along to the Beaulieu celebration on Sunday, June 3, when they can park up within the museum complex for a great day for owners and enthusiasts alike – last year more than 800 took part.

Organisers said: “Whether you drive a Boxster, 911 or something a little older such as a 924, all models in all conditions are welcome at Simply Porsche, which is set to provide a great opportunity to admire other’s vehicles and to connect with fellow enthusiasts.”

Visitors will also get the chance to vote for their favourite car on show in the People’s Choice Award.

Drivers of high-end Porsches are frequently penalised by insurers because of the supposed higher risk associated with high powered cars.

Adrian Flux takes a different approach. We know people who buy their dream car are likely to take special care of it. We also know that many owners of performance cars keep them as cherished vehicles and have another vehicle for daily use.
