"Concept cars are myths of the near future. When future-obsessed novelist JG Ballard coined that phrase he may have been thinking of the Mercedes C-111. Not that we are all driving around in bright orange, gull winged machines — but we "

Mercedes AMG 63
It’s rare that we post about super saloons. But recently having experienced a ridiculously fun cross-country trip in an E39 BMW M5 – we think we’ve fallen in love with the idea of a big, subtle sleeper that has the ability to transport you at warp speed without so much as disturbing your expensive haircut.
And as these things go, our selective attention has been drawn recently to Mercedes latest, ridiculously tech-heavy, lightweight monster the AMG 63.

Amazingly this latest iteration comes with an increased power output of 40 BHP- count them- 585BHP – yet the claimed average return of fuel consumption is a shade under 28MPG. God knows how lightly you have to keep the right foot hovering to achieve that sort of efficiency – but Mercedes aren’t the type of company to pull figures out of thin air.
According to the press release the car is over 100KG lighter than the previous 63 – a weight saving that was achieved largely thanks to the use of AMG forged light-alloy wheels, a lightweight lithium-ion battery and a weight-optimised high-performance composite brake system.
We must be growing up a little – but we can’t get this sort of suave brute out of our automotive consciousness these days…
- We think the 63 might make the perfect Bond baddie car….
- New heights achieved here in dynamic efficiency.
- Rear three quarters our favourite perspective here…
- Nice type that states the not so obvious.
- Those are super-light forged alloys…
- The most powerful engine in the super saloon sector with an average claimed MPG of over 27. Pretty stunning.
