A new two-part BBC documentary follows the journeys of two of the most promising young drivers in the country, Ruben Stanislaus and Lewis Appiagyei, who even get to meet one of their idols Lewis Hamilton, as they go from racing in karts to professional race cars. 

Both professional race-driving hopefuls Ruben and Lewis, who are proudly sponsored by Adrian Flux, have dreamt of racing in Formula 1 for as long as they can remember. They both raced go-karts for over a decade, winning hundreds of trophies between them. But can they make the step up from karts to cars? This BBC documentary, available on iPlayer, follows their journey over one season. 

We are England – Belonging: Born to Race, episode one

Part one details the lives of Ruben and Lewis’ families, and how each driver has been backed both emotionally and financially for them to follow their dreams. With karting costing tens of thousands of pounds a year, and cars costing even more, Ruben and Lewis detail the sacrifices they and their parents have made to help make their dream become a reality. The episode also details the shocking lack of diversity within professional motorsport, which is a barrier their hero Hamilton broke through, with the duo hoping to do the same.

Meanwhile episode two starts off with the pair travelling to the world-famous race track at Silverstone after they were invited by a race team to test drive a £150k car and prove their abilities in order to win a seat at a professional race at Donnington Park in six months’ time. It’s also a golden opportunity for them to be noticed by other teams.  

Elsewhere in the episode, they also get a chance to meet their hero, seven-time F1 world champion Hamilton, at Mercedes’ Formula 1 headquarters, who provides the pair with invaluable advice on breaking into the professional world of motorsport and discusses the lack of diversity that has held so many talented drivers back.
