A rare right-hand drive Harrods Range Rover which cost more than the average home when it first went on sale in the 1980s is back on the market – for around £30,000.

Customised with the up-market department store’s unmistakable green livery and with “Harrods Knightsbridge” sign-written on the back, it boasts a number of eye-catching modifications.

The most noticeable is the horizontally slatted steel grill which envelops the front-end protecting the headlights and side indicators.

The roof is trimmed in tan everflex with a glass sunroof and an impressive array of spotlights. The car sits on Wolfrace Turbovec wheels shod with BF Goodrich all terrain T/A tyres.

Inside, the Wood & Picket-fitted Recaro seats are trimmed in the finest Harrods green Connolly leather, piped in tan to match the roof. The colour scheme extends to the lavishly trimmed door panels and facia.

Harrods Range Rover boasts a Betamax VCR

The instruments were sourced from Smiths and sit in a full-width burr-walnut dashboard.

The car was fitted with air conditioning and every-known gadget of the day, including computer key-pad lock for the ignition and rear Sony television with state-of-the-art Betamax VCR. Entertainment was handled up front by the latest eight-track stereo.

It also came with a matching 48cc folding motorcycle although, sadly, this car does not have one stashed in the boot.

The car cost its first owner £38,000, around £10,000 more than the cost of a typical family home at the time.

The Harrods Range Rover has not kept pace with property prices however as its pre-auction valuation is now £29,000 to £37,000.

Most  Harrods Range Rover’s were left-hand drives sold into the Middle Eastern market so this right-hand drive is especially rare.

“An honour” to auction Harrods Range Rover

Mathew Priddy, auctioneer at Historics at Brooklands, said: “It’s an honour for us to be auctioning such a rare, iconic and magnificently-equipped Range Rover.

“It is a sure-fire investment as it is believed to be the only right-hand drive model remaining, having travelled an average of less than 1,000 miles a year since 1983.”

He said it is thought the car is the only remaining right-hand drive Harrods Range Rover and added: “It drives and handles extremely well, is beautifully presented, has low mileage, and is rare and luxuriously equipped. It ticks all the right boxes.

“Given the meteoric rise in popularity of even the basic models of late, this looks to us like an ideal place to invest in what is a collaboration of two of the largest and most quintessentially British brands.”

Historics at Brooklands will be auctioning the Harrods Range Rover on Saturday, May 20, at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire.
