Mercedes 220 Coupé (111)

Cars

A neighbour of mine used to own one of these beauties. There’s something amazingly sculptural about the curvature of the glass in the rear three-quarter that made me sigh.

Never having been a particular Mercedes fetishist, the way this coupé is burnt into the cortex is surprising.

The redesign of the straight-ahead sedan into the lovely two door format was the responsibility of engineer Paul Bracq in the early 1960s – and it’s in the long, low lines that blend beautifully into that rear three quarter -augmented by the lovely glass work – that puts this car into the class we’ll be aching for.

In Royal blue with whitewalls please.

Mercedes are not really known for stylish cars but as Coupe that seats 4 adults this is both stylist and classy. Personally I think its never been bettered.
