Airstream, the iconic American camper van brand, has borrowed the best of British design expertise to craft its latest offering, the newly-unveiled ultimate in cool caravanning – the Airstream Globetrotter.

After introducing an affordable Airstream last year, the 80-year-old American caravan company is back with a new twist on the classic trailer.

The Airstream Globetrotter is a European-inspired trailer with a minimalist interior and ability to go off-grid.

The model takes its name from the company’s founder Wally Byam, who set out across Europe in an Airstream with the words “Globe Trotters” written along the side.

Now, almost 70 years later, the company headhunted UK design firm Astheimer Limited to help with the new Airstream Globetrotter model.

Airstream Globetrotter: clean, uncluttered, modern

Company chief exec Bob Wheeler explained: “The Airstream Globetrotter is designed specifically for people with a sophisticated taste in design; they like clean, uncluttered modern design, but without the hard edge.”

The 27-footer can sleep up to six comfortably and comes with two interior finishes – natural elm and dark walnut.

The kitchenette has a three-burner stove, larder, and fridge, and dining area which doubles as a lounge while the bathroom comes with a shower.

The chief exec said: “There are more curves in this design, whether it’s the corner of the cabinets, or the design of the bed or the seating that wraps around you, even the edges of the cushions.”

“There are no sharp edges, no sharp corners. It draws you in and looks like something you would want to spend some time in.”

The Airstream Globetrotter has an optional solar panel package that includes two 80-watt solar panels, two batteries, and an inverter.

There are other sustainable elements such as low flow water fixtures and LED lighting.

Wheeler estimates that 90% of the materials used in the Airstream construction are recyclable.
