1. The Pogues – Fairytale of New York
You only need to listen to the first few bars to recognise this song. For many, Fairytale of New York provides welcome relief to the usual hyper-upbeat Christmas tunes, with a more realistic (and sad) story behind the lyrics. Random fact: MacGowan was actually recovering from a bout of double pneumonia when he wrote the lyrics, which he said helped give him some good inspiration for the lyrics.
2. Bob Dylan – Must Be Santa
Quite possibly one of the most upbeat Christmas songs, this version of Must Be Santa uses a polka style, which is a folky sort of Czech dance music. We recommend giving the official music video a watch too if you haven’t seen it already!
3. Chris Rea – Driving Home for Christmas
We couldn’t not include Driving Home for Christmas by Chris Rea on a playlist for a Christmasy roadtrip! Thankfully it’s a classic, and one of you noted that he’s been driving home for Christmas since 1986 which made us laugh! We hope he makes it home soon…
4. Pretenders – 2000 Miles
Whilst the lyrics aren’t the most Christmasy, we think this still technically counts as a Christmas song – after all, Christmas is mentioned in the lyrics, and the music video includes snow, polar bears and skiing. A stretch, but we like it too much to take it off the list.
5. Jose Feliciano – Feliz Navidad
Although we can’t understand all the lyrics, the catchy beat easily makes Feliz Navidad one of our favourite Christmas tunes. We’re sure it’ll have you tapping your fingers on the steering wheel as you drive.
6. Queen – Thank God It’s Christmas
We don’t know why Queen is so eager for Christmas, but maybe he wrote the song after time travelling to the year 2020 and seeing all the craziness that was this year. We know that we’re looking forward to the festivities this year for sure!
