How does a home-mounted wind turbine work?

Like most industrial wind turbines, the wind will cause the domestic wind turbine’s blades to turn. This causes the turbine to produce electricity that can be used to power appliances in your home.

The stronger the wind, the more electricity the turbine produces.

Do wind turbines affect house insurance?

Most renewable energy sources like the small wind turbines that can be installed on your property won’t affect your home insurance premiums. However, it is always best to let your insurance provider know if you’re planning on installing a wind turbine – just in case.

Do I need to let you know if I’m planning on installing wind turbines on my property?

Yes, you should always let your insurance broker or insurer know whenever you make any changes to your home or property. The non-disclosure of important information could result in your household insurance policy being cancelled without warning.

Which kinds of wind turbines do your insurers cover?

We work with over 30 insurance providers, so this will vary depending on the insurer. The main wind turbines we cover include:

  • Pole-mounted turbines: these are freestanding on an area of your property that is optimally exposed to wind.
  • Home-mounted turbines: these are usually installed on the roof of your home where there is suitable exposure to wind.

Will my insurer pay out if my wind turbines are damaged accidentally?

In general, yes. The types of accidental damage we cover include fire, flood risk, storms, impact and subsidence.

Why is Adrian Flux the best insurance broker for wind turbine insurance cover?

Whilst the number of people using renewable energy is increasingly in the UK, wind turbines are still considered a fairly specialist area of home insurance. As a result, choosing a specialist insurance broker is ideal for ensuring you get the right level of cover.

As one of the UK’s leading specialist insurance brokers, Adrian Flux is perfect for getting the cover you need. Our lines are open seven days a week, allowing you to speak to a member of staff about exactly what you need any day of the week.

FAQs

Does this include damage caused by the elements?

For the most part, our insurers cover small domestic wind turbines against most sources of accidental damage, including that caused by the elements. Speak to us now on for more information.

What are the benefits of having wind turbines?

Whilst it can cost more upfront to install small wind turbines on your property, they can be more economical in the long run – especially if you live in a particularly windy area!

The government has set up a new scheme called the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). This essentially requires licensed electricity suppliers to set up a tariff for any excess electricity generated by your wind turbines or other renewable energy sources that is exported to the National Grid.

Essentially, this ensures you get remunerated for any energy routed to the grid, meaning that you could see returns on your investment fairly soon after installation! Insuring wind turbines on your property helps protect your investment, with minimal additional costs to you.

Do you offer other types of renewable energy insurance?

Yes, we provide solar panel insurance too. If you have both types of energy sources on your property, just let us know and we’d be happy to cover both. And even if you use a source of renewable energy we haven’t listed, give us a call on and we might still be able to help!
