Disabled Driver Insurance

Existing customers please call

Adrian Flux was a disabled driver himself. He founded the company that bears his name in 1973 after struggling to get insurance for his beloved kit car, and looking after the needs of disabled motorists has been a priority ever since. While the disabled motoring landscape has changed enormously since those early days, we have tried to stay true to our principles.

Cheap Car Insurance for Drivers with a Disability

Disabled drivers have always had difficulty in obtaining a policy from the mainstream insurers, and although they have bucked up their ideas since the Disability Discrimination Act came into force, their lack of expertise with modified and disabled adapted vehicles can often leave them struggling to compete on price or quality of service. Whilst Motability has made huge inroads in helping people onto the roads, there are many people who do not fit their eligibility criteria, or are unable to take up the insurance component due to their prior history or current circumstances.

The needs of disabled drivers have helped shape Adrian Flux into the company it is today. Our kit car insurance expertise was acquired when our founder set up schemes to cater for his fellow disabled kit car owners. We became specialists in modified car insurance, including mobility adapted vehicles of all types.. And american car insurance became another string to our bow, because disabled drivers started importing vehicles from the USA – in those days automatic transmissions were an unreliable rarity in European models, and with the superior ride quality on offer made them a popular choice. And as manufacturers from the Land of the Rising Sun produced models for their home market which were eminently suitable for conversion into wheelchair accessible vehicles, we were able to offer insurance for japanese imported vehicles.

Car Insurance for Disabled Drivers and Adapted Vehicles

If your vehicle is modified in any way to cater for your disability, it is wise to consult with a specialist – in the event of an accident you want to be sure that your adaptations are covered on a like-for-like basis, and that you are dealing with people who know the difference between different types of vehicle controls or access enhancements.

We aim to help disabled drivers gain access to the vehicle of their choice, whether that is a Caterham, adapted M3 or a wheelchair accessible GMC van. And with insurance for drivers from age 16, cover for carers and, if required any driver policies available, we have built our policies around the needs of the disabled community.

We also accept Motability claim-free driving in lieu of NCB.

We can cover any legal adaptation to your vehicle on a new for old basis, whether the whole vehicle has been converted by a specialist, or you are using aftermarket accessories to make a car more accessible. Among the adaptations we can cover are:

  • Ramps
  • Tail Lifts
  • Person and Wheelchair Hoists
  • Adapted Controls
    • Tiller Controls
    • Steering Wheel Balls
    • Joysticks
  • Transfer Seats
  • Wheelchair Storage
  • Restraints and Belts
  • Side Steps
  • Winches
  • Electronic Ring Accelerators
  • Throttle and Brake Hand Controls
  • Twin Flip Pedal Transfers
  • Handbrake adaptations
  • Infra Red Controls
  • Child Harnesses
  • All Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAV) converted from cars and vans

Dependent on the scheme, we can also supply you with a loss of use allowance, in the event that a suitable courtesy car is not available and cover your manual wheelchair against accidental damage or loss while it is kept in your vehicle.
